Make Your Own Board Games
Sure, you could buy your child the games they want (and I really hope you do!), but why not take it a step beyond and give them everything they need to make their own game? When you make your own board games, you engage parts of your brain that normally lie dormant when playing games. Making board games is a great way to enhance whatever your child is learning or interested in, it also engages their brains in some higher order thinking. And let’s face it, you’ll be the hero of the game!
Making board games is an extraordinary testing alternative, it’s a fabulous story writing and handwriting activity, and it’s a great tool for teaching your child critical thinking. What follows is a list of some of the supplies my children & I have found most helpful in our game creation process.

Books About Designing Board Games
Designing a game isn’t as easy as you may think, so start with a great book about the subject. Make Your Own Board Game by Mila Moore is a good place to start. In this book the author will take you step-by step from conception to fruition. For readers who are a little more advanced and experienced, The Board Game Designer’s Guide is a great resource.
Another really great book, more for parents and older children, is Game Logic. Game Logic takes readers through the hows and whys of creating STEM-based learning games for all ages.
