Keeping our kids safe online is imperative. I’ve written before about how my family uses Circle with Disney for online monitoring but there is one thing it can’t do, control YouTube. YouTube & YouTube Kids has been a frustrating experience for us. YouTube & YouTube Kids are incredible digital learning tools but they just aren’t safe for little eyes. Not only is there a problem with unsafe content on YouTube (including YouTube Kids!) but often the advertisements are even worse than the videos. There hasn’t been a way to avoid these things, until now. The Safe Vision App is AMAZING! It allows parents to curate individualized, ad-free channels for children of all ages. I am so stoked about this app, and it’s FREE to boot! There is a premium version available too, read on for more info!

What is Safe Vision and Why Do We Want to Use YouTube Monitoring Software?
Safe Vision is so great because it does what parents have been asking YouTube to do for ages, but they refuse to do. Safe Vision allows you to access videos curated by age, block YouTube channels, block individual videos, add channels & videos you want your child to watch, limit YouTube/YouTube Kids daily viewing, track videos watched (great for adding to daily record keeping), and all in an ad-free environment! Safe Vision is the best way to know what your child watches and prevent problems before they start! And the app is FREE for basic use with one child profile!
With Which Platforms is Safe Vision YouTube & YouTube Kids Monitoring Compatible?
Safe Vision is compatible with Apple, Android, and Kindle Fire! Visit the Safe Vision page to download and try the app.
How Do I Use the Safe Vision YouTube & YouTube Kids Monitoring App?
This app is so easy to use that I don’t really need to go into details here. Download the app, click on it, and follow the instructions. Easy peasy lemon squeezy!
How to Set the Safe Vision App Up for Younger Kids
Once you assign your child’s age range some of the most popular channels for that age range will appear. You can click on the channel name to add or delete the channel. You’ll also be able to add and block specific channels. Switch the app to child mode and it’s now safe for your child to use the Safe Vision app to watch videos. Channels & videos cannot be added or removed without the PIN you assign to the app, so no worries about your kid adding videos you don’t want them to see.
How to Set the Safe Vision App Up for Older Kids
The same young children’s videos are included for all ages. The age range option for older kids allows you to select interests specific to that child (to use the app with more than 1 child you need to subscribe to the premium version, read on for info about that!), but you can also add any channel you want. In the example below you can see how I added the channel Struggle Meals to my teen’s profile (that’s an amazing channel to teach people how to inexpensively cook meals for one, perfect for kids about to fly the coop.)
PRO TIP: If you’re using Safe Vision on an Apple device you can enable Guided Access so your child cannot exit the app without a pin code. Android users can use Touch Lock to achieve the same results as Guided Access. For Kindle Fire you can disable Silk in parental controls and be sure not to have YouTube downloaded.
Ok Meg, you like it but what do other people think?
I shared this app with a local homeschool group to see if anyone else uses it, here’s what two moms had to say:
“We’ve been using it for several months now…worth every penny!” – Melinda D., homeschooling parent
“YouTube Kids was not making the cut. My son was still watching stuff not in his age group. I’m happy I found this.” – Keleesha M., homeschooling parent
Awesomesauce! Do I NEED the premium version?
No, you don’t NEED the premium version but you’ll probably want it. Why? Look at all these perks for just $2.99/month (at the time of publication):
-Unlock Unlimited YouTube channels (free limit is 5)
-Set a longer daily time limit, the default is 1 hour
-Create up to 7 unique child profiles, the free version comes with one
-Use Safe Vision on unlimited devices instead of just one
-Free 7 day trial of premium.
-Subscribe to an annual plan and get 16 months for the price of 12!
You can subscribe to the premium version from the app menu.
